Translators' House Wales Translation Challenge
The Translation Challenge was established by Translators' House Wales in 2009 to promote and celebrate the crucial contribution translators make to enabling literature to travel across frontiers, and to draw attention to literary translation as one of the creative arts.
The 6th Translation Challenge, which was launched in June 2013, was to translate 3 poems in Spanish by the Cuban poet, Victor Rodríguez Núñez, into either Welsh or English. The Challenge this year has been judged by Ned Thomas.
Mererid Hopwood was presented with a Bardic Staff at a special ceremony at the National Eisteddfod for her winning translations into Welsh.
The winner in English will be announced and presented with a Bardic Staff on October 17th during the first event of the North Wales International Poetry Festival in Bangor University.
Each year the Bardic Staff is carved from a piece of wood from Llanystumdwy by Elis Gwyn. It is sponsored by Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (The Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters).
